In the Kicking Horse Pass region of British Columbia Canada, there is a well known railroad feature called the “Spiral Tunnels”. This treacherous span of rail is renowned for an extreme change in altitude for the train system calling for spiralling tunnels to help ease this change for locomotives and cargo. Before the tunnels however, there was an appropriately named “Big Hill” prior to 1909. In this special charcoal rendition of a 1890 photograph, we see three steam locos working exceptionally hard up this hill heading east. Notice the runaway safety track on the right heading downhill. An incredible collide of mankind and nature in this historical moment. Today only the steel bridge stands beside the now Highway 1 as a heritage site for many visitors.
